The McKinnon Prize for 2024 recognises the outstanding leadership of elected representatives who have driven positive impact through their vision, collaboration, courage and ethical behaviour this year.

The McKinnon Prize recognises outstanding leadership in three categories:

  • McKinnon Political Leader of the Year - Federal
  • McKinnon Political Leader of the Year - State / Territory
  • McKinnon Emerging Political Leader of the Year

Nominations

Each year members of the public are invited to nominate political leaders for the McKinnon Prize Political Leader of the Year and Emerging Political Leader of the Year awards.

Shortlist Announced

The Shortlisting Committee considers all nominations. Following an assessment of each nomination against the prize selection criteria, the Committee develops a shortlist of nominees (agreed by consensus) for consideration by the Selection Panel. The Shortlist is announced shortly after the Shortlisting Committee meeting.

Recipients Announced

The Selection Panel evaluates the shortlisted nominations and, considering the established prize criteria, determines a recipient for each prize. The Prize winners are announced shortly after the Selection Panel meeting.

Annual Oration

The McKinnon Prize recipients are formally recognised and celebrated at an annual oration event. Each recipient receives a trophy and participates in a program of activity in recognition of their achievements.
